작업노트

호주 빅토리아의 산기슭에 위치한 보공마을은 정션댐(Junction Dam)으로 유명하다. 많은 관광객들이 이 거대한 구조물을 보기 위해 방문하곤 한다. 키와(Kiewa) 수력발전 지역의 첫 번째 댐으로 1944 년에 건설된 정션댐은 4000 여명의 건설 인부들을 고용해 만들었고 현재도 근처 마을의 전력 공급을 위한 수력발전댐으로 가동 중이다.

이 거대한 구조물을 처음 봤을 때, 리처드 세라의 돌 조각이 떠올랐다. 미니멀하고 신비로우면서 믿기 힘든 위용을 자랑하는 그 모습 때문이었다. 콘크리트 구조물이지만 아름다워 보였다. 그중에서도 특히 오래된 면의 텍스처에 매혹되었다.

댐 주변을 서성이며 휴식을 취하다가 떠오른 생각이 있다. 댐을 둘러싼 자연은 한순간도 멈추지 않고 공기와 빛, 바람, 습도에 의해 항상 변화하고 있다는 사실이다. 어떻게 하면 이 매혹적인 공간을 내 시지각적 영역으로 온전히 표현할 수 있을까 궁리했다. 강한 직사광으로 인해 드리운 그림자는 댐과 댐을 둘러싼 자연을 미묘하게 다르게 비추며 이질적 풍경을 만들어냈다. 나는 오랫동안 댐의 그늘에 앉아 빛과 그림자가 만들어낸 환영을 뒤쫓았다.

정션(Junction)은 이 댐의 이름이기도 하지만 교차하고, 연결되고, 합류된다는 뜻을 지녔다. 사진 역시 같은 공간 속에서 서로 다른 요소들이 결합하고 해체하고 다시 결합하며 또 다른 세상을 만들어내고 있다. 빛이 만든 검은 그림자는 끊임없이 변화하며 세상을 드러내고 있다.



Artist Statement


Bogong Village is very famous for Junction Dam. Many tourists come to see this giant structure. Junction Dam was completed in 1944. It was the first dam in the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme and at its peak it employed more than 4000 people. Hydro Electricity is still generated at the village today.

The artificial lake, just below the junction of the Rocky and Pretty Valley branches of the East Kiewa River, is one of seven storage points and operates a 26,000 kilowatt power station. When I first saw this marvelous structure it reminded me of Richard Seera’s stone installation.
Junction Dam is astonishing, minimal and mysterious. It is composed of concrete but has esthetic values. I am especially fascinated by the antiquated textures of the walls.

When I was sitting near Lake Guy, I suddenly realized that nature’s atmosphere is a combination of air, light, wind and humidity. So I tried to figure out how I could capture this beautiful dam. This region has exceptionally strong sunlight and nature’s ambience is so complex, entangled and continuously changing I had to spend long periods of time in the shadow of the dam to capture the colors of the Light.

The word junction means linking, crossroad and joining. The Dam wall photos consist of many kinds of junctions. Through these photos, I want to highlight the hidden.
