사진과 영상을 다루는 정정호 작가와 목조각을 하는 이수빈 작가는 커플이다. 이들에게는 중요한 구성원이 하나 더 있는데, 바로 고양이 밀감이다. 사람만 살던 공간에 고양이가 들어오면서 모든 것이 달라졌다. 단순한 아름다움을 추구하던 집 안은 고양이가 숨는 공간인 박스와 스크래처로 어지럽혀지고, 최적의 고양이 동선을 생각해 가구가 배치되었으며, 그토록 자주 들락날락하던 해외는커녕 1박 이상의 국내 여행도 어려워졌다. 가장 높은 곳과 가장 경치 좋은 곳은 고양이 차지가 되었고 집에 돌아오거나 나갈 때 제일 먼저 인사하고 안부를 전하는 것도 서로가 아닌 고양이 밀감이다. 이 작업은, 고양이 밀감이 우리에게는 토템이 아닐까 하는 생각에서 출발한다. 작가 정정호와 이수빈은 그들이 신성시하는 존재, 받들고 돌봐야 하는 존재인 고양이를 토템으로 기린다.

“토템은 북아메리카 인디언 오지브와족이 어떤 종류의 동물이나 식물을 신성시하여 자신이 속해 있는 집단과 특수한 관계가 있다고 믿고 그 동·식물류를 집단의 상징으로 삼은 데서 유래한다. 오늘날 토템이라는 말은 이런 유의 사회현상에서 집단의 상징이나 징표로서의 동·식물이나 자연물을 가리키는 데 널리 쓰이며, 토테미즘이란 토템과 인간 집단과의 여러 가지 관계를 둘러싼 신념·의례·풍습 등의 제도화된 체계를 가리킨다.”

토템은 인간의 역사에 오래 존재해왔다. 그리고 오늘날 우리에게도 각자의 토템이 존재한다. 기꺼이 애착과 애정을 쏟아붓고 그로 인한 제약을 받아들이며, 마치 바다로 모여드는 물줄기처럼 보는 것, 듣는 것, 생각하는 모든 것이 그곳에 이르러 강력한 신앙이 된다. 우리는 현대인을 지탱하는 내밀한 애정의 대상을 토템으로 해석하고 그것을 다양하게 표현해 보고자 한다. 또한 각자의 길을 가던 서로가 공통의 존재로 연결되어, 그것이 촉발한 예술적 상호작용을 풀어내고자 한다.

sculpture are a couple. Another important member of this family is Milgam, their pet cat. As the cat has come into a space where only people were residing, everything has changed. The inside of the house seeking simple beauty was messed up with boxes the cat hid in and scratches she made.
The furniture was arranged optimally in consideration of the cat’s movements. Setting out on a more than one-night domestic trip was impossible, let alone overseas travel. The best place to look out was taken by the cat, and as soon as one of them comes home or leaves home, they first say hello to Milgam, not each other. This work starts from the idea that Milgam may have been a totem for them. Jungho Jung and Subin Lee honor of the cat they have to hold sacred and take care of as a totem.

“The word ‘totem’ derives from the Ojibwa, a North American Indian tribe that adopted certain plants and animals as a collective symbol of the tribe, holding them sacred and believing that those are in a special relationship with the group they belong to. This word today is widely used to refer to animals, plants, and natural objects as collective symbols or tokens. Totemism is a reference to institutionalized systems such as beliefs, rituals, and customs pertaining to several relationships between totem and a human group.”

Totems have long been with us in human history. Each of us has our own totem. We gladly have an attachment to and readily accept restrictions brought on by this totem. All we see, hear, and think is influenced by beliefs in terms of this totem. We interpret a secret object of our affection by which we are supported into a totem, trying to express it in a wide variety of ways. We also try to interpret artistic interactions triggered by all of us who form a community while going our own separate ways.
